Background:

The school was founded in 1875 but as the community developed, the building became inadequate. In 1973 an infant department was built over half a mile away from the original school. However in 1999 the two schools were consolidated into a single site with a new six classroom block and information centre being added onto the existing infant department. The school is set in a thriving rural community which is 'forward thinking in its outlook, testified by the success of the Walkington School Action Group which campaigned for New Deal for Schools funding of #432,000'. Besides academic success, the school is a 'happy busy place' which welcomes parents in to help and which offers a 'wide range' of extra-curricular activities as well as child care both before and after school.
