Background:
St Mary's was founded in 1988 as an amalgamation of Marist College and St Mary's High School. It is 'regularly' over-subscribed. The school'sits on the site of the old St Mary's incorporating the original 1954 building with additional facilities built in 1988. Sports feature prominently in the school's life and it holds the 1999 'Sports mark' award; information and communication technology 'is a particular strength'. Religious education is based on the teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church and all the courses offered at Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and A/AS level religious studies have been selected to reflect this. In Key Stage 3, activities covered ' rugby, hockey, soccer, netball, striking/fielding games, basketball, dance, trampoline, fitness, track/field athletics, cross-country, badminton, tennis. A range of clubs provide extra-curricular activities and the pupils are able to take part in visits and exchanges. The aim of the school is to foster the moral, spiritual, cultural, mental and physical development of all pupils, believing that each individual pupil has a right to the maximum access to the full curriculum.
