Background:

Sidmouth Primary opened in 1988 after Hull's reorganisation of schools. The buildings, which are Grade II listed, were originally built in 1911 as a demonstration school for the local teacher training college. The school is sited near both Hull University and Lincolnshire and Humberside University and consequencely some pupils are the children of visiting foreign students. The nearby housing is dense. There is a lack of green space and houses generally do not have gardens but although the school currently does not have a field of its own, pupils are transported to a nearby field for field sports. A campaign has been running since 1986 to use vacant allotment plots nearby to provide the school with a more accessible field. As well as resourced classrooms the school has a dedicated music room, resourced with instruments and a piano, which can also be used as an audio visual room. There are three libraries and three halls with various functions, including one which converts to a gymnasium. Each class has at least one computer, and resources are 'well organised and at a good level to effectively teach the national curriculum'. The school has 'positive, strong' links with the local community. Parental relationships with the school are 'good'. The school offers a range of extra-curricular activities which take place outside school hours. These include a 'Kids Club', netball and football teams, a band and recorder group as well as cycling proficiency, line dancing, gardening and individual music tuition. The school's netball team is 'highly successful' and its footballers also 'do well' despite not having a field of their own to practise on.
