Background:

Pickering High School is a mixed, split site, 11'16 specialist Sports College. The present school was opened in 1988, after a significant shakeup of Hull's schools. Originally a grammar school it draws its pupils predominantly from the Gipsyville and Boothferry housing estates. The school itself is on two sites, a lower and an upper school, both set within extensive playing fields. The school has recently undergone a major refurbishment and building programme. State of the art facilities are a feature of the new teaching block including a resource centre and new graphics suite as well as a multi-purpose flexible exhibition space. Computer facilities have been developed to maximise internet/intranet communications. Creative areas are among the school's strengths, with 40 per cent of pupils choosing to be involved in extra-curricular activities to do with art, music and sport. In addition there is a popular Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme unit in the school. Trips abroad as well as trips to theatre, museums and galleries are also arranged. The school aims to provide a well-ordered safe and caring environment where each student is valued as an individual and enabled to achieve success.
