Background:
Newland St John's is a voluntary aided Church of England primary school in the north of Kingston-Upon-Hull, close to the university. It is an average sized school that caters for pupils aged four to 11 years. It was opened in November 1865 as Newland National School. The church attached to the school is a well-attended, 'lively' church with funded community workers and outreach programmes. There are several out-of-school activities offered in an ongoing attempt to develop the leisure pursuits open to the children. Different clubs run throughout the year, ranging from sports clubs, through curriculum based clubs such as the mathematics club, to more traditional provision. The school has a small orchestra and a developing choir. Sports that have been enjoyed by different children in the last two years are football, rugby, cricket, athletics, jujitsu, dance, swimming, badminton, short tennis, archery, canoeing, go-carting, table tennis, netball, rounders and orienteering. The school has a caring Christian family ethos.
