Background:

Isaac Newton is a maintained co-educational comprehensive school, and has just over 551 pupils aged 11 to 16. The buildings were built in the 1950s, and were originally a grammar and a secondary modern on the same site. The two merged in 1969 to form Greatfield School - then a 13-to-18 comprehensive - and became an 11-to-16 school after the re-organisation of all Hull schools in 1988. After many internal changes, Greatfield School became Isaac Newton School in September 1995. The school has a proud tradition of serving the community for over 30 years. Isaac Newton School has some of the best school buildings in the city. The school places great importance on cleanliness, comfort and attractive surroundings. The buildings are in excellent repair and it prides itself in displaying pupils' achievement around the school. There are two main buildings - Annandale and Hemswell - plus an art block and a centre for expressive arts (drama, dance and music). The Annandale building houses the Harry Lewis community library, and the English, religious education and workshop areas, together with a gymnasium and a modern PC computer network. The Hemswell building houses its recently modernised science laboratories, mathematics, humanities, languages and more technology rooms. The school has an excellent record for football, rugby, cross-country and athletics. Several pupils have represented their county and country. A further computer room and a second gymnasium are also there, together with two halls and the staff centre. The aim of the curriculum at Isaac Newton is to provide a broad, balanced and coherent education, which aims to maximise the potential of pupils of all abilities and interests. The school has stair climbers, ramps and toilets for children with physical mobility disability. A lift is available for access to the first floor of the building.
