Background:
Founded in 1908 in the centre of the market town of Beverley, the school shares a joint sixth form with Beverley Grammar School. It has a long-established tradition of achievement in academic work, music, drama, art, sport and work-experience; high reputation within the community, both at local and county levels. Subject departments are housed in purpose-built rooms, while the library and sixth-form are in a Grade 1 Georgian house within the grounds. A new technology block opened in 1991 and a new art suite in 1995, together with additional science facilities. Its catchment area is socially mixed and provides the full range of ability, taking pupils from Beverley and the surrounding villages of Tickton, Walkington and Wawne. A total of 100 computers are available to pupils. Wide range of sports and clubs is offered and more than 20 teams are represented in inter-school competitions in netball, hockey, athletics, rounders and badminton. Sport, music and drama are 'notable' among the school's extra-curricular activities. There are choirs, orchestras, school productions and concerts and lunchtime clubs include gym, trampolining, wind band, Scripture Union, judo, dance, weekly charity fund-raising events, hockey, netball and athletics. More than 20 clubs and societies also include a European Society and Crime Prevention Panel. Specialist technology college status. Over-subscribed, with 1.3 applications per place.
