Background:

Appleton is a community primary co-educational day school that caters for children aged four to 11 years. The school originally opened its doors to pupils nearly 50 years ago. Initially it was a middle school but following reorganisation of schooling in Hull in 1986 it became a primary school. It occupies a spacious site, surrounded by playing fields for outdoor education. It has a library, which was opened in November 2000. It has a nursery unit, which is located in a separate onsite building. In 2004 the school opened its new building. The school aims to provide the widest possible range of extra-curricular activities and clubs. These include dance, drama, computer, recorder, choir, football and athletics. During the year each class has the opportunity to go on a school trip. These tend to be varied and always relate to subjects that are being taught within school. Since March 2000 the school has held the Basic Skills Quality Mark award and has successfully renewed this award in 2004. The school also holds the Roy Castle Award for clean air and Healthy Schools award. The school aims to promote a culture within the school, which has emphasis on high standards and expectations.
