Background:

Whilst there is evidence of there having been a school in Swanland since 1693, the current school opened on its present site, in 'mature' grounds on the corner of Tranby Lane, in 1970. The building is a 'unique amalgam' of the original 1920s James Reckitt Memorial Hall and newer 1970s and 1999 architecture. There is also a purpose-built infant department, hall and kitchen with another three temporary classrooms on site. Sited in a suburban, almost rural environment, close to the A63 and Humber Bridge, the school has achieved 'consistently high results' since testing began. All sporting groups in the school are 'well-supported' and compete with other state and public schools. Athletics and cricket are the 'most notable' sports. Soccer, netball, hockey and rugby union are also 'popular'. Founded in 1955, Haltemprice Sports is an annual sporting event at the local athletics stadium, fully administered by school staff and attended by up to eight other primary schools. In addition to sports, extra-curricular activities include musical groups and tuition, gymnastics, drama, French, photography, chess and cycling proficiency. The choirs, strings, wind band and orchestra compete 'successfully' year on year at the local music festivals of Hull and Hornsted. There is also a school bookshop. The school has a 'very strong and supportive' Parent Teacher Association and governing body. Every year, the pupils participate in a sponsored walk for charity. Staff and children make 'every effort' to uphold and support the School Charter.
